Japan Day Festival

Celebrate the rich cultural heritage of San Francisco’s Japantown! Join us for a day of exhilarating performances, demonstrations, and workshops by Japanese artists from Tokyo, Chicago, and the Bay Area. Taiko, Japanese classical and folk dance will be presented at the Peace Plaza. The Mall stage will showcase bonsai, ikebana, classical shamisen music, and shodo calligraphy. Japan Day is in partnership with GenRyu Arts. FREE event.

The Japan Day Festival is part of the Japan Week Celebration. These other events are available as part of the celebration.

Japantown Merchants Obon Dance Practice Sessions June 30, July 2, 7, 9 6:15pm-7:15pm
Free lessons on folk dancing in preparation for Japan Day, Japantown Merchant Obon. Location is May’s Coffee shop inside the Japan Center West Mall. Post and Buchanan Streets, SF. Japantown.

Hands-on Workshop: Intro. to Nagauta Shamisen July 9th 6:30pm-7:30pm
Grand Master Chizuru Kineya of Tokyo, Japan will share her expertise on the proper way to hold the bachi (plectrum), and tune a shamisen. Learn how this instrument is played. Please bring your shamisen, or borrow one for $20.00, or come and watch. Class held at Union Bank hospitality room in Japan Center East Mall next to Daiso. Please rsvp at: space is limited.

Lecture/Demonstration July 12th: Dressing for Nihon Buyo (Japanese Classical Dance) with Fujima Ryu of Chicago 12:30pm-1pm
There are many styles of costumes and layers of clothing chosen for each character and season. A short demonstration and lecture about this art form will be shared. space is limited.

Shadow to Shadow July 12th 2pm and 7:30pm shows:
A new interdisciplinary work by Melody Takata with shamisen performers Chizuru Kineya (Tokyo), Tatsu Aoki (Chicago), and jazz saxophonist Francis Wong with support from Individual Artist Commission of Cultural Equity Grants.
